Everyone is involved with SARDW on a completely voluntary basis. Handlers and their dogs are available to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week. They rely on the goodwill of their employers to allow this response. The nature of our surroundings in the Southern Lakes means there are vast alpine and wilderness areas to get out and enjoy. The potential for people to get into difficulty also increases. Experiences such as the avalanche on 12 September 2000 near Treble Cone reinforce that there definitely is a need to maintain this valuable resource. ![]() and character!! Heidi met Vice while tracking alongside him and his previous handler Pete, on a five day search a few years ago here in the Southern Lakes. Due to injury during training Heidi was asked to 'retire' Vice to the farm where she lived and then attempted to help him integrate into her family. He had no intention of stopping being a search dog and spent all his spare time tracking Heidi’s children, which they loved. After his injury healed, and with support from Pete, Heidi contacted NZ LandSAR Dogs. Last 2 years were spent learning about becoming a dog handler and training alongside Vice (a great teacher) and Instructors from NZ LandSAR Dogs. Thanks to the patience and support of a few Handlers/Instructors Heidi passed Assessment (tracking) in September 2009 and has enjoyed the continued learning that this Industry demands. Vice is ecstatic that he hasn't retired just yet.
